The Promise Foundation’s mission began the day a promise was made to Susan DeZaio, a friend, daughter, wife and mother, who died at the young age of 45 after a 22-month battle with melanoma. Thanks to the help of generous supporters, our momentum has been building since 2009. The Promise Foundation’s inaugural fundraising event held in the spring of 2010 raised over $100,000 and attracted 400 donors primarily from northern NJ. Since 2011 we have raised over $275,000. Melanoma is the fastest growing cancer in the U.S. We are determined to make our expanding community more aware of this potentially devastating disease. Our focus is the promotion of skin cancer awareness and prevention. We partner with the world's most recognized organizations in this field, including the Melanoma Research Alliance, The John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC), Memorial Sloan Kettering, The Valley Hospital, and The Mollie Biggane Melanoma Foundation. What people are saying...
"I was proud to be a small part of the Promise Foundation program you put on again this year. Having
Carol Brush and Gia Portfolio here really made the program great.
I was encouraged last Friday, June 1, when I saw many of our 8th grade students exiting the school buses
from their Sandy Hook science field trip wearing their orange Promise Foundation bags. The message on
their backs was a great reminder of what they need to do to be protected.
On behalf of our school and student body, I wanted to thank you for all of your effort in bringing the
important message of awareness and protection to GW.
"My son just got invited to Indian Trail Club with a friend for the day. I told him to go get ready and to put his sunscreen on now. He said, "yeah mom - you know you have to put your sunscreen on 30 minutes before you go out". I then told him to throw a bottle in his bag and he told me "you're supposed to re-apply during the day, even if it says waterproof or sweatproof". I've been saying these things to him for years and it's always been a bit of a battle. Now he's telling ME what to do - thanks to the Promise and your work at GW. So just thought you'd like to know that the message is getting through. Thanks for all your hard work and for caring about the kids."
"Kudos to you! The Graydon camp shirts look awesome and I think the kids like the phrase "reapply before you fry". I have seen the shade tents at Graydon and at a lacrosse camp. Thank you for your hard work. It shows and is making a difference. I believe prevention and awareness can be a 'cure' for skin cancer. Thanks for your help in protecting all the kids!"
"The presentation was fantastic. It was more than what I expected."
"Thanks for keeping "the promise" alive at BF"!
"Thanks again for sharing your important message with us. I look forward to a continued partnership."
"All three of my children are more cautious about their sun exposure thanks to the fantastic job the Promise Foundation is doing in educating them on the subject."
"When The Promise Foundation presented their program to my middle school, I quickly learned about the dangers of skin cancer. Ever since that day, I have been wearing the bracelet they gave me to remind myself that UV radiation means serious business."
